Reuters is looking for a driven and ambitious journalist for a high-profile position reporting on Asia’s huge and fast-growing energy markets, focusing on liquefied natural gas production and trade. You will report on liquefied natural gas (LNG) spot prices, long- and short-term supply deals, project development and financing. You will examine the interplay between rising power demand, expanding electricity markets and changing energy transition politics on gas consumption. The successful candidate will break news, spot fresh industry trends, write data-driven stories and generate an outstanding news file that will include ambitious investigative pieces. You should be comfortable writing across a range of topics and formats. You will be required to contribute reporting and writing on the biggest stories of the day on energy and commodities as part of a wider global team. You will be expected to turn around fast-breaking stories in a highly competitive news environment. The role requires the drive and sourcing skills to engage directly with participants in an often opaque market to break news. You will need to be flexible- and ready to expand and adapt coverage in line with the needs of the global team and the changing underlying industry.

About the job

As our Asia Energy Correspondent, you will:

• Report on pricing, tenders and cargo movements from producer export terminals to consumer import hubs. Write weekly market reports on Asia’s physical LNG markets.
• Monitor LNG output from top producers such as Australia, Indonesia and Malaysia as well as consumption by top importers such as China, Japan, South Korea and Taiwan.
• Expand coverage on growing demand from southeast and south Asian nations.
• Develop impeccable sources among the top LNG producers, buyers and traders in Asia.
• Break news on the most important developments in LNG markets and the regional energy sector.
• Develop deep market knowledge to identify and report out market-moving themes and trends.
• Develop understanding of Asia’s power generation fuels and electricity markets.
• Develop stories and formats to include graphics, pictures and TV, as appropriate.
• Undertake some regional travel to cover industry events.

About you

As our Asia Energy Correspondent, you will likely have:

• Minimum five years of experience reporting on regional and global energy or commodity markets.
• Minimum three years of reporting on wider political and industry news.
• Proven ability to break news fast and reliably.
• Strong news judgment, ability to write with speed, clarity and accuracy.
• A track record in delivering longer-form stories.
• An extensive contact book in the Asian energy industry and the enthusiasm and drive to engage directly with market participants to build on that contact book.
• Strong data handling & analysis skills.
• Experience working with large global teams.
• Excellent written English
