The Johnson & Johnson Medical Devices (JJMDC) Industrial Design and Human Factors (IDHF) organization is seeking multi-faceted, exceptionally talented, Co-Ops who are passionate about improving the quality of people's lives through compelling design experiences. The successful candidates will join our teams to elevate world-class design and human factors engineering approaches throughout the organization. 


The following positions listed below will be based at our Cincinnati OH, Raynham MA, Somerville NJ, and Irvine CA offices and will report directly to the IDHF team at those locations for the period of January to April 2022. The opportunity to work both onsite and remote is also a possibility.


We have openings in the following disciplines: 


Human Factors Engineering Co-Op:


  • Leverage human factors standards and best practices to inform new product designs and ensure concepts support safe, effective, and satisfying use
  • Support the planning, conduct, and reporting of various user research activities, including ethnography, focus groups, formative usability tests, and HF validation (summative usability) tests
  • Consolidate user feedback into meaningful design insights and actionable recommendations
  • Perform thoughtful and thorough root cause analysis for use-related problems that arise during hands-on usability tests
  • Understand the regulatory imperative for medical device human factors, including relevant human factors standards and guidance documents, such as IEC 62366 and FDA's final HF guidance
  • Contribute to human factors documentation, including formative and summative test plans and reports, expert reviews, use-related risk analyses, use specifications, known problems analyses, and Human Factors Engineering reports
  • Author study documentation (e.g., informed consent forms, study participant recruitment screeners, moderator's guides, use error checklists)
  • Perform quantitative and qualitative data analysis to support user interface design recommendation
  • REQUIRED: resume should demonstrate course work or experience in user research, foundational knowledge of human factors principles, strong critical thinking, problem-solving, and excellent written communication skills.


UIUX Design Co-Op:


  • Synthesizing and shaping large amounts of information to drive understanding for internal team members and external partners. Examples include analyzing user research, auditing the competitive landscape, exercising storytelling skills through presentations.
  • Performing usability heuristic evaluations, sketching user flows, defining information architecture, establishing UI workflows, and wireframing interfaces.
  • Assisting with pixel-perfect screen layouts - establishing a hierarchy of elements and refining type/button sizing based on display size, contrast ratio, Human Factors specifications.
  • Prototyping micro-interactions via a UI prototyping tool such as Figma, Sketch, and Adobe XD and/or After Effects.
  • REQUIRED: A portfolio link in the resume that demonstrates strong organizational, critical thinking, problem-solving, communication, and presentation skills.


Industrial Design Co-Op:

  • This role is for students who are passionate about all phases of the design process including but not limited to, research, concept sketching, product renderings, 3D database development, animation, experience design, usability testing, product marketing support, and concept presentations.
  • Experience using 2D and 3D design software (SolidWorks, Adobe Creative Suite, and KeyShot) is required.

General Requirements:

  • Enrolled in an accredited college/institution pursuing a Bachelor's or Master’s degree in Industrial Design, Human Factors Engineering, Usability Engineering, Cognitive Science, Interaction Design, or Human Experience Design.
  • A minimum GPA of 3.0, with demonstrated leadership/participation in campus programs and/or community service activities
  • Availability for a full-time 4-month co-op rotation.
  • Students must be authorized to work in the United States and NOT require sponsorship in the future.
