Position: Associate, Curriculum and Facilitation
Reports to: Senior Manager, Curriculum and Facilitation
Status: Full-time Exempt
Start Date: September 2021

The Job
The Associate, Curriculum and Facilitation will be responsible for working with the Curriculum and Facilitation Events department to develop inclusive and holistic in-person and virtual programming for our six-year Fellows Program and facilitate Career Fluency® workshops. The Associate will work with outstanding young people, enjoy the responsibility to create and collaborate, and seize a real opportunity to create social change. The position is located in downtown Manhattan.

Since 2003, The Opportunity Network (OppNet) has ignited the drive, curiosity, and agency of underrepresented students on their paths to and through college and into thriving careers, powered by our commitment to access and community. This year, OppNet will reach more than 10,000 students of color across the nation to support them in achieving their college and career goals.
• OppNet’s founding Fellows program works with 1,000+ students over the course of six years, from 11th grade through to college graduation, to provide college guidance, five summers of paid internships, career exposure and skills-training, and support in growing personal and professional networks.
• OppNet’s Career Fluency® Partnerships Program works with 35+ schools and youth-serving nonprofits across 20+ cities to build their capacity to amplify college and career outcomes for their own students.
• Through Opportunity Ignited we provide advisory services to corporations seeking to embed values of diversity, equity, and inclusion in their businesses.
• UninterruptedED, launched in 2020, is OppNet’s free, open-access learning portal for students and educators offering flexible courses spanning our proprietary Career Fluency® curriculum.

The Person
The ideal candidate will personally connect to the important work we do and value diversity, equity, and inclusion (DE&I) across the organization. The candidate will demonstrate DE&I values by actively participating in all organizational-wide learning sessions and self-reflection as well as working with others to enact changes that contribute to meeting the organization’s DE&I goals. The candidate should possess maturity and discretion, organization and attention to detail, energy and initiative, the ability to prioritize and complete a variety of tasks on time, and a willingness to work on a wide range of assignments.


Curriculum Development and Team Support (50%)
• Support the Curriculum and Facilitation team in developing and enhancing OppNet’s in-person and virtual Career Fluency® curriculum by writing new curriculum, using feedback to revise existing curriculum, integrating student agency into curriculum, and ensuring alignment between pedagogical practices and curriculum development;
• Lead curriculum review and development for 11th Grade
o Plan and oversee review process for Summer Institute and 11th grade weekly classes
o Co-lead Class Prep meetings with Student Services & Program Operations team for 11th grade classes (year-round) as Curriculum Representative
o Support connection between 11th grade and Core Competencies
• Collaborate with Curriculum Team members, program leads, and Partnerships Team to ensure that the programmatic onboarding to and content in the OppNet UninterruptED platform is consistent with our values, curriculum, and pedagogical practice (particularly for 11th grade)
• Continue learning anti-racist, anti-oppressive and inclusive pedagogy theories and practices to implement into new and existing curriculum for OppNet Fellows
• Work with the Curriculum and Facilitation team to audit curriculum and ensure all existing and new curriculum is anti-racist, anti-oppressive, and in line with OppNet’s pedagogical framework;
o Build out systems for learning more about Fellows’ needs so they can be built into OppNet’s curriculum development, facilitation, and accessibility resources
• Collect feedback from staff and students on lessons and curriculum from program intensives and weekly workshops
• Work on special projects for the Curriculum Team, as needed

Facilitation & Training (20%)
• Help research, prepare, and co-facilitate curriculum & facilitation professional development for program-wide staff
• Facilitate 11th Grade Summer Institute as a Core Team member and manage the curriculum development for 11th grade intensives
• Facilitate weekly workshops and events program-wide for the Fellows, with a particular focus on 11th grade
o While OppNet runs a virtual/blended program model, this role will focus on facilitation for virtual cohorts
o When large-scale program intensives are able to happen safely in-person, this role will need to be present (College Trip, Summer Institute, Speed Networking)

Continuous Improvement (15%)
• Research, learn and become well-versed in OppNet’s guiding pedagogical practices, grounded in teaching for social justice, culturally responsive teaching, and student empowerment and agency
• Continually research and learn about best practices regarding pedagogy and andragogy to implement into curriculum for OppNet Fellows and staff
• Provide leadership and mentorship for Facilitation Learning Community(ies) at OppNet as needed
• Provide leadership assistance with tasks related to the goals of Curriculum Equity Working Group
• Collect, analyze, and understand program data to drive continuous improvement and decision making

Overall Fellows Program Assistance (15%)
• Work with the team to provide high quality and inclusive programming and facilitation by revising and expanding our current assessment tools and rubrics in alignment with OppNet’s Equity Goals
• Support Recruitment efforts for new classes of Fellows by leading school visits, reading applications, collaborating on interview materials, and co-leading interviews
• Conduct in-person check-ins with an assigned caseload of high school Fellows
• Serve as a chaperone for college and other field trips, as necessary
• Work alongside other program teams to pitch in, as necessary and to maintain relationships with students and get to know program-wide content.
Qualifications & Requirements
• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited U.S. college/university;
• Two to four years of work experience, preferably in the education/youth development field;
• Demonstrated ability to create and collaborate on curriculum for secondary and/or post-secondary students;
• Demonstrated ability to connect with high-achieving high school and college students from underserved communities;
• Demonstrated ability to facilitate class sessions in rigorous but dynamic fashion with cultural responsiveness;
• Strong skills in using Microsoft Office and PowerPoint, experience with video editing a plus;
• Strong research skills and ability to synthesize findings;
• Commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion work in education;
• Enjoys working with high school and college students;
• Superb oral and written communication skills;
• Strong experience writing and peer-reviewing lesson plans;
• Familiarity with the various industry and career trends;
• Strong organizational talents and the ability to meet deadlines;
• Availability and willingness to work some weeknights and weekends;
• Self-starter with strong entrepreneurial drive: takes initiative; comfortable operating in growth mode and wearing many hats; can operate self-sufficiently, but also collaboratively as part of a team;
• Demonstrated continuous learning toward a student-centered approach;
• Demonstrated belief in The Opportunity Network’s mission; and
• High degree of effectiveness - gets things done!
