Job Description


The Seattle Cancer Care Alliance (SCCA), located in Seattle, Washington, is part of a dynamic collaboration among three organizations known nationally and internationally for their patient care and research: Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, University of Washington, and Seattle Children's. Over the past 25 years, these institutions have worked together to support their mission of adult and pediatric oncology patient care services, research and education.


The pharmacy intern program at SCCA is a structured, 3- to 4-year program designed to assure that the intern, upon completion of the intern program in conjunction with an accredited Pharm.D. program, will be able to competently perform distribution as well as supportive clinical duties in an ambulatory practice setting.  Each year of the program has designated expectations and goals that corresponds with each professional year of pharmacy school. The goals and objectives of this program focus on providing the intern with experience in distributional as well as clinical roles.


First year interns:

  • Counsel patients on appropriate use of their medications under pharmacist supervision
  • Navigate point of sale (POS) system
  • Dispense oral chemotherapy
  • Process retail prescriptions
  • Order Entry
  • Automated Dispensing Cabinet (Pyxis) Functions

Second year interns:

  • Prepare all IV admixtures (hazardous and non-hazardous sterile compounding) using proper aseptic technique in a correct, efficient, and timely manner
  • Check all prepared IV admixtures for clarity and particulate matter
  • Initial and label all prepared IV admixtures, including appropriate auxiliary labels
  • Process returned IVs
  • Follow clean room procedures as required by USP 797
  • Demonstrate attitudes and behaviors that should be held by clean room personnel
  • Know and follow all IV room policies and procedures
  • Perform all first year intern duties


  • High school diploma or equivalent is required
  • Applicants must be enrolled in the University of Washington School of Pharmacy
  • This internship is open to first and second year pharmacy students
  • Ability to communicate verbally in person, on the phone, and in writing in a clear, concise and professional manner

  • Ability to perform basic pharmaceutical calculations

  • Ability to navigate computer programs, and enter data into computer systems accurately

  • Familiarity with the generic names of drugs along with the basic indication
