Senior Vice President for Marketing and Communication
The Ohio State University is seeking a visionary and influential Senior Vice President for Marketing and Communications (SVP). Reporting to the President, the SVP is the institution’s senior leader responsible for the overall brand, marketing, and communications strategy and implementation. The SVP will build an integrated, highly collaborative team of strategic marketing and communications leaders who are responsible for centralized centers of expertise, as well as college and unit-based marketing and communications professionals who support the distinct needs of colleges and units in building and protecting the brand, enhancing reputation, and inspiring choice of the institution.

The SVP will lead the development of an institutional marketing and communications plan to position Ohio State prominently within key markets and with critical stakeholders, to deepen understanding of Ohio State, and to engage and build meaningful relationships with our diverse set of audiences. The SVP will accelerate the institution’s brand strategy and current brand-building efforts through audience translations, experience activation and alignment of the master brand and associated cascading programs, initiatives, and campaigns. The SVP will play a critical role in managing the institution’s reputation through effective communications, media, and public relations practices, as well as cultivating key relationships with media, government, and community leaders.

As a member of the President’s Cabinet and key advisor to the President and Board of Trustees, the SVP will advise on institutional issues and serve as a primary spokesperson and leader during crises. The SVP will develop deep partnerships with the President’s cabinet, academic deans and unit directors to understand unit-level goals and distinct marketing and communications needs and connect unit-level messages and strategies with the overall direction of the institution –developing shared solutions that enable teams and optimize resources that further support the deans and cabinet leaders.

The SVP will possess a deep knowledge of contemporary marketing and communications practices, ideally within higher education and other industries, and deploy integrated strategies and channel plans to drive measurable impact through more agile, data-informed, and technology-enabled approaches.

The ideal candidate is a:
• Change agent who creates momentum while being responsive to an evolving landscape
• Sophisticated thought leader who leverages their knowledge and experience to support the institution’s direction
• Tested leader with deep experience in complex organizations and situations
• Relationship developer who builds strong partnerships at all institutional levels
• Team builder with a proven ability to develop and harness diverse talents, knowledge, and experiences
• Skilled coach who cultivates people across distinct marketing and communications functions
• Disciplined practitioner with a strong background in brand and marketing strategy development, strategic communications, and digital marketing.

Key Responsibilities
• Lead the full integration of a collaborative strategic marketing and communications team, including centralized centers of expertise and embedded college/unit marketers and communicators across the university and health enterprise
• Strengthen Ohio State’s market position by guiding and implementing a cohesive brand platform and cascading programs, initiatives, experiences, and campaigns for the institution’s core audiences (e.g., students, faculty, staff, alumni, donors, patients and fans/patrons) across all touchpoints
• Cultivate an audience centric, data-informed, integrated, and innovative approach to marketing and experience management
• Serve as primary strategist for institutional issues management and spokesperson during crisis communications
• Support other SVP/VP units through clear, strategic marketing and communications plans, materials, and implementation (e.g., enrollment, fundraising, employee, recruitment and engagement, new patient acquisition) while reducing duplicative or competing efforts across units
• Cultivate mutually beneficial relationships with local, state, and national media, government officials, and community leaders to advance the institution’s core priorities

Key Qualifications and Experience
• Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree preferred
• 15+ years marketing and communications experience at the executive level, preferably within higher education
• Demonstrated success leading and implementing omni-channel marketing campaigns from strategy and creative development to execution and measurement, with an emphasis on online and offline channel integration
• Experience working and leading teams in a complex, highly matrixed environment, regularly engaging with senior leaders and board members
• Demonstrated success developing highly effective teams who manage critical projects and relationships on behalf of the institution
• Experience in strategy development and long-range planning
• Exceptional written and oral communication skills with demonstrated experience representing an institution in times of crisis
