Job Description
Utilities Maintenance Specialist
Job Summary: Performs routine preventive and corrective maintenance on a variety of mechanical components, vehicles, buildings & grounds, and equipment found in water and wastewater facilities; performs other duties as assigned.

Essential Functions:
Cleans and/or performs minor preventive and corrective maintenance on equipment used to provide water and wastewater service (pumps, conveyors, compressors, clarifiers, tanks, etc.) Some duties will require entering confined spaces
Cleans and/or performs minor repairs to buildings and structures
Cleans and/or performs minor preventive and corrective maintenance on motor vehicles and other assorted equipment (riding/push mowers, portable pumps, generators, pick-ups, etc.)
Cleans, prepares, and applies protective coatings to wood, metal, concrete, or other surfaces
Performs a variety of grounds maintenance duties (clearing ditches and fence lines, cutting grass, edging, lawn restoration, etc.)
Monitors supply inventories by tracking minimum and maximum stocking levels, completing associated paperwork and supplying information to the appropriate person to be entered in the automated tracking system
Performs other duties as assigned
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Ability to gain working knowledge of St. Mary’s County Metropolitan Commission policies and procedures
Ability to act as a representative of St. Mary’s County Metropolitan Commission to the public
Knowledge of relevant maintenance and repair practices and procedures as they relate to mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems and equipment, diesel and gas operated equipment, and hydronic boiler systems
Knowledge of safety regulations and established procedures for operating, repairing, removing and installing equipment/materials as well as for ensuring safety
Ability to effectively communicate with other staff members and the public
Ability to prepare and maintain accurate records
Education and Experience:
HS Diploma or GED
Or equivalent technical training, education, and/or experience
Physical and Environmental Conditions:

Work requires occasional strenuous effort. For example handling of heavy tools, equipment, or materials of 30 to 60 pounds or more. Work environment involves high risks with exposure to potentially dangerous situations or unusual environmental stress which require a range of safety and other precautions, e.g., aggressive human behavior, extreme outdoor weather conditions, confined work space, or similar situations where conditions cannot be controlled.
