Oakton Community College Announces Two Tenure Track Faculty Openings Beginning in August 2015


Des Plaines, IL - Oakton Community College announces two tenure track faculty openings beginning with the 2015-2016 academic year in August 2015. The faculty positions are as English as a Second Language-English Generalist and as Graphic Design faculty. Located in the near north suburban Chicago communities of Des Plaines and Skokie, Oakton Community College is a caring community of educators dedicated to excellence in teaching and learning. Faculty employed by Oakton are culturally competent, current in their use of evolving technologies, active in promoting critical thinking, and committed to challenging their students to be knowledgeable, ethical, and capable global citizens.

Cultural competency is defined as a composite awareness, emotional maturity, and insights and skills including, a self-insight and the ability to suspend judgment and take responsibility for one's self, self-control of emotions and demonstration of empathy; experience with and success in valuing and working with people of different gender, gender identity, race, ethnicity, religion, national origin, socio-economic status, and sexual orientation; and adaptability and flexibility in understanding and addressing problems and opportunities in situations where different cultural perspectives and points of view are in play.

Applicants must be strong communicators and effective classroom facilitators in a student-centered environment; committed to college-level teaching and innovation in learning, current and skilled in use of technologies; and active in promoting critical thinking. Enthusiastic faculty who are committed to innovation in college level teaching and learning are sought to fill these positions, as are faculty who have an interest in non-traditional delivery of instruction. Oakton expects professional competence, strong leadership qualities, professional development participation, and institutional and departmental service from faculty. Prior undergraduate teaching experience is preferred.

The English as a Second Language-English Generalist faculty hire will primarily teach higher education academic courses in English as a Second Language, and will have demonstrated an excellence in teaching these courses. Faculty with additional academic credentials to teach Composition and Developmental Reading and/or Writing will also be assigned to teach those courses.

Faculty hired to teach Graphic Design will largely teach courses in web design and is expected to serve as the coordinator for the department. Oakton seeks prior experience in chairing or coordinating an academic department from this faculty hire.
