"Working for the U.S. Department of State not only gives you
the opportunity to live and work abroad, it also allows you to
really expand and diversify yourself as a person."

After 15 years of working in IT in the private sector I was surprised to learn about the U.S. Department of State's IT opportunities.

I was in South Africa with my spouse, who was in the Peace Corps, when a U.S. embassy employee suggested I consider using my computer programming skills as a Foreign Service Information Management Specialist. After learning about the application process, I decided
to apply.

Over the years, I've had the opportunity to live and work in Conakry and Kampala supervising teams of IT professionals responsible for setting up, operating and managing complex telecommunications systems. I've learned to repair computers on-site using whatever tools are available. Currently, as a Program Manager, I ensure that all projects meet the goals and objectives of the Department's IT strategic plan. I also act as a sounding board for ideas and approaches to understanding how various IT developments will impact these plans.

But it's not all work for me. I also take pride in volunteering to teach the children from local villages how to use and identify the different parts of computers so they can become acquainted with technology. Being a Foreign Service Information Management Specialist allows me to not only serve my country, but to also make a difference in the communities surrounding our
U.S. embassies.

My time as a Foreign Service Specialist has given me a thirst to find new ways that technology has contributed to the agency's success globally. More important, being a Specialist has taught me that the sky is the limit with the U.S. Department of State.

If you are ready to apply your professional skills, cultural background and unique perspectives
to a global public service career, consider becoming a Foreign Service Specialist with the U.S. Department of State.

You'll have the opportunity to live and work abroad, and choose from more than 20 different career paths. Foreign Service careers - both Officers and Specialists - also offer access to training, development, and outstanding benefits including paid housing and education for children between K-12 when serving overseas. We also provide health and medical coverage, a federal retirement plan, and generous paid leave.

Whichever path you choose, you will work in a fast-paced environment helping America to fulfill our diplomatic mission abroad.
