"This is a very educational and challenging experience for me. It gets me out of my comfort zone and gives me an opportunity to serve my country."

Growing up in a small town in South Carolina, the idea of traveling and seeing new places excited me. I always had big dreams of becoming an engineer and had great affinity for travel. While at Clemson University, I became a member of the National Society of Black Engineers and it was with their guidance that I attended a job fair which led me to a career with the U.S. Department of State. Today, I am a Foreign Service Specialist charged with protecting U.S. embassies and consulates worldwide, as I focus on technical security policy. My career allows me to travel and to use my leadership skills and gives me the ability to solve problems relating to a variety of security systems.

So if you are ready to apply your professional skills, cultural background and unique perspectives to a global public service career, I encourage you to consider becoming a Foreign Service Specialist with the U.S. Department of State.

Based in Washington, D.C., our Civil Service offers 10 mission-critical career paths that range from Foreign Affairs to Contract Procurement to Human Resources while the Foreign Service provides an opportunity to live and work abroad as an Officer or Specialist, with the choice of more than 20 different career paths. Whichever path you choose, each day you will respond with effective solutions in a fast-paced environment to help us fulfill our diplomatic mission.

As you make a difference and contribute to our global society, you will have unique professional and personal experiences as you interact with your host country colleagues and communities. There are opportunities for travel, training and development, as well as outstanding benefits, including paid housing and education for children between K-12 when serving overseas, health and medical coverage, a federal retirement plan, and generous paid leave.
