A Great Opportunity For HBCU Connect Alumni and Graduates!

DES PLAINES, IL - Oakton Community College announces a Dean of the Science and Health Careers division opening, with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2011. A premier comprehensive community college, Oakton serves the near northern suburbs of Chicago with campuses in Des Plaines and Skokie.

The College is known for its academic innovations, commitment to serving students, solid financial position, and supportive environment for both students and employees. Oakton seeks a Dean who is an innovative academic leader and who will continue a strong tradition of excellence; a dynamic and creative leader committed to the values of the community college. The preferred candidate will have the proven ability to work collaboratively and communicate effectively; a demonstrated capacity to think strategically, prioritize effectively, and act decisively; and an appreciation for the cultural complexity of a richly diverse student body and community.

Candidates committed to working in a culturally competent environment are especially valued at Oakton.

The Dean of Science and Health Careers provides educational leadership for faculty in the division under general direction from the Vice President for Academic Affairs. Instructional and operational activities are supervised and directed by the Dean, with the objective of facilitating and improving learning and student development. Divisional classified staff employees are supervised and directed by the Dean.

The quality and relevance of academic programs and services in the division are ensured through participation in institutional and departmental assessment and planning activities. Working with department chairs and coordinators, and appropriate College administrators and staff, the dean initiates and facilitates marketing plans and activities to advance divisional departments. Class schedules are developed in conjunction with the department chairs and coordinators.

The Dean also employs part time faculty, classified staff, and other resource personnel for the division; and recommends the employment of full time faculty to the Vice President for Academic Affairs. Faculty loads are assigned; and divisional faculty, department chairs and coordinators, and classified staff are regularly evaluated, with appropriate personnel action initiated or recommended by the Dean. Faculty professional development activities are also facilitated by the Dean.

Baccalaureate disciplines housed within the division are Biology, Chemistry, Earth Science, Physical Education, and Physics. Career program disciplines found in the division are Associate Degree Nursing, Basic Nurse Assistant Training, Health Information Technology, Horticultural Therapy, Medical Laboratory Technology, Pharmacy Technician, Physical Therapist Assistant, and Radiologic Technology.

The successful applicant will have a Masterís degree in a discipline appropriate to the division, and a minimum of three years of progressive leadership in an academic environment. A doctorate is preferred.
