4 Things College Students Should Know About Motorcycle Safety

4 Things College Students Should Know About Motorcycle Safety
Posted By: Anica Oaks on December 16, 2020

Motorcycles are a convenient form of transportation that helps college students save on gas and manage common issues such as tight parking spaces. While your motorcycle might be your preferred way to get around your college town, there are some risks involved with riding one every time you hit the road. These motorcycle safety tips help you avoid accidents that could limit your ability to continue to ride your bike.

Wear the Appropriate Gear

Motorcyclists tend to have varying opinions about helmets. Some people like how they can help to keep the wind and bugs out of their face. Others feel like wearing a helmet is cumbersome. While both of these feelings are valid, it is important to protect your head if you do lay your bike over. Traumatic brain injuries are common after a motorcycle accident, and a helmet is your best line of defense against getting one. Riding suits are another piece of gear that can help prevent road rash and other common injuries.

Practice Avoidance Maneuvers

Once you are on the road, you should be constantly scanning for potential obstacles. Always leave enough room between you and the other vehicles on the road for you to practice an avoidance maneuver in time to stop an accident. You can also take safety courses that teach you how to properly perform an emergency brake or swerve to avoid an obstacle.

You’ll also want to practice what to do if you have an accident. Knowing how to gather information for your href="http://www.ironhorselawsc.com">motor... lawyer makes it easier to begin getting compensation for any injuries you sustain.

Increase Your Visibility

College students tend to like to deck out their bikes, and this is one area where you can feel good about your car budget. Upgrading the lights can increase your safety on the road both at night and during the daylight hours. You can also choose to wear brightly colored clothing and ride slightly to the left or right of vehicles to make sure they can see you in the mirrors.

Ride with Other Bikers

When possible, riding with a group of other motorcyclists is best. Try to make some friends on campus that you can ride to school with every day. Being in a group increases your visibility. You can also cover each other’s back by watching out for safety hazards and serving as witnesses if an accident happens.
The most important thing to remember is that you can do everything you can to be safe and still be hit by a negligent driver. Sadly, even a minor accident can leave you facing traumatic injuries to your body. Always to everything you can to avoid an accident. If one occurs, then take steps immediately to begin processing your case.
