Where to Begin When Your Goal is to Work in Medical Research
Posted By: Dixie Somers on October 07, 2020 The healthcare industry is always growing. With new health advancements and medical research done every year, there are many opportunities to get involved. It might even be your goal to be on the frontlines of medical research to find cures for otherwise incurable diseases. If this is your long-term goal, here are some ways to get your foot in the door and what jobs to look for that will bring advancement opportunities. Entry-Level Lab TechnicianWhen starting out as a lab technician, your duties might include labeling samples and making sure proper procedures are being followed. An entry-level lab technician position is a great way to get started in medical research. It might not seem exciting at first, but will allow you to learn on the job. An entry-level technician position typically doesn’t require a degree either. It can be a good part-time position for those who are in getting their undergraduate degree. Lab TestingOnce you’ve received a little more education and experience, working in lab testing is a great next step. This job can get more hands-on. You will be working with the actual specimens and following testing procedures. Many types of testing require knowledge of certain kinds of software as well. Lab testing will help you get acquainted with medical technology that will help you in your future positions. Unlike working as a lab technician, you will need a bachelor’s degree to become a lab tester. Clinical ResearchOnce you have the experience of labeling and testing specimens, you can get into clinical research. Clinical research can cover anything from genetics, vaccines, or pharmaceuticals. You can work in the research lab to study specimens, or work as a project manager for a clinical research organization. A project manager doesn’t require a medical or healthcare degree. They lead research teams to make sure successful trials are being completed. It is a great option if you want to make a difference in medical research without working in a lab. There are many types of lab and research jobs in the medical field. If you are just getting acquainted with the industry, try finding some lab technician jobs in local laboratories near you. This will then lead to other opportunities and allow you to eventually end up in your dream job where you get to make a difference.
