The Scarlet Showcase

The Scarlet Showcase
Posted By: Ivan Butcher II on June 29, 2020

As an Artist, I find it very disturbing to witness the destruction of Art.

Now, the destruction and defacing of those racist historical monuments and statues targeted excited mixed feelings, especially because of the symbolism those Works of Art represented.

It is understood, that in the civilized society, a Work of Art will be viewed and interpreted from many different perspectives, liked or disliked. But not for society to just accept, that if a Work of Art is offensive, destroy it!

An appropriate option could be to just leave them as reminders to the inhuman practices they represent. To take them down is like swiping the Past under the rug," Out of sight, out of mind.

"

Instead this situation can be treated like their practice, during the 1800s in New England, when a citizen committed a moral indiscretion, they wore a Scarlet Letter all through out town signifying their crime / sin to the community.

Those offensive monuments from the Past can be left as the Scarlet Reminders to the Past, never forgotten and never allowed to be repeated.

These offensive artifacts do not have to be allowed to remain in their current prominent locations, but they should be replaced with Works of Art designed and made by Black Artisans.

Those statues and monuments dismantled can be relocated to enclosed sites, The Scarlet Showcase, where an admission fee can be charged,to those looking to see these relics from the Past. The money raised can be used to fund worthy educational programs.

It makes sense to me!
