Scientist III, Bioreactors for Protein Expression and Viral Vectors

The individual will work as part of the Cell Biology R&D team to develop new products in cell and gene therapy and protein expression fields within the Thermo Fisher product commercialization process under the Gibco™ brand.

The successful candidate will possess a strong background in mammalian/insect cell culture for protein expression or viral vector (AAV, LV, etc.) production, with experience from flask-scale to rocker/ stirred tank bioreactor scale. Strong experience with operating, optimizing, and troubleshooting scale up of stirred tank bioreactors from bench scale (1 – 10L) to pilot scale (50L+) is essential. Experience with perfusion-based systems is highly desirable. Knowledge of Design of Experiments, statistical data analysis and Quality by Design concepts is highly desirable. Knowledge of both transient and stable production systems.

The candidate will require strong organizational skills to support full documentation of new product development for complex projects. Ability to multitask and maintain a results-oriented focus is essential.

The candidate will be required to maintain accurate lab notebooks and training files in accordance with relevant Thermo Fisher required standards to support patent application and defense as well as other international standards (e.g., ISO compliance, GLP/GMP requirements, etc.).

Typical requirements will include preparing and presenting experimental data summaries and protocol writing. Perform literature searches related to products under development and new idea generation. Work with internal and external customers to troubleshoot problems and understand unmet needs. The successful candidate will make contributions to scientific literature and conferences and comply with all company safety regulations and procedures.

Education

  • M.S. degree or higher with a demonstrated background in cell biology or other closely related disciplines.

Experience

  • 5+ years industry or academic experience with mammalian/insect protein or viral vector expression in the transient or stable production setting.
  • Extensive experience operating rocker and stirred tank reactors at the multi-liter scale.
  • Small scale automation (i.e. Ambr mini-bioreactor systems) a plus
  • Use of DoE for experimental design
  • Experience in utilizing equipment for metabolite profiling, protein concentration determination, etc.
  • Standard molecular biology techniques including DNA cloning, plasmid preparation/purification
  • Protein expression/purification/characterization
  • PCR, gel electrophoresis; genomic sequencing and/or cell line engineering skills a plus
  • Demonstrated competence completing tasks under direct supervision
  • Solid technical writing skills
  • Excellent time management skills and multi-tasking capabilities
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills and the ability to interpret, summarize, and present scientific results in a clear, concise, accurate manner to both technical and non-technical audiences
  • Demonstrated ability to achieve results and solve problems.
