Mechanical Engineer

Location/Division Specific Information

This role will report into the New Product Development team within Clinical Next Generation Sequencing Division of Thermo Fisher.

There are full-time opportunities in both the South San Francisco, CA and the Guilford, CT R&D campuses.

How will you make an impact?

We are seeking a strong candidate to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team of engineers, chemists, software developers, and molecular biologists.

As an engineer in the Clinical Next Generation Sequencing Division, you will develop innovative genetic sequencing technologies that make positive changes to the people around you. Your effort will improve outcomes for cancer patients, accelerate cancer research, as well as track COVID mutations and other emergent diseases impacting the world.

What will you do?

  • Use mechanical design skills, modeling, prototyping, and laboratory testing to define, design and verify hardware solutions for new cutting-edge instrumentation
  • Collaborate with the development team to ensure design goals achieved
  • Work hand-in-hand with the Operations team to transfer your products into manufacturing

As a Mechanical Engineer III, you will provide technical expertise regarding electromechanical designs. In addition to creating high-quality designs, you will analyze mechanical systems, equipment and packaging. As part of the design effort, you will conduct feasibility studies and testing on new and modified designs. This role will work with the development teams to ensure the designs meet the project goals, reliability, and cost targets.

How will you get here?

    B.S in Mechanical, Bio Engineering, or related field - 2 years of experience in electromechanical design.

    A higher degree may have fewer years of industry experience, commensurate with your degree

      • Experience designing electromechanical systems - this can be demonstrated in any industry if you have the willingness to learn and a strong work ethic
      • Demonstration of a strong analytical skill
      • Demonstration of troubleshooting and failure analysis skills

      Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

      • Experience with SolidWorks, Pro-E, or similar 3D mechanical design software essential
      • Understanding of packaging, mechanical, and electronic assemblies
      • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
      • Excellent organizational and team skills
      • Thrive in a fast-paced, challenging environment
      • Adept at planning, prioritizing, multi-tasking, and following through
