The Group Leader, Global Privacy & Cybersecurity Law, will lead and manage a global team of specialized lawyers who are responsible for providing our Corporate functions and our Pharmaceuticals, Medical Devices and Consumer businesses with legal advice, shaping data protection strategies and assuring compliance with existing and emerging privacy and data protection laws and regulations. This Group Leader will counsel senior business leaders around the world on critical Privacy and Cybersecurity matters. The position will be responsible for prioritization and coordination of privacy and cybersecurity legal advice with other J&J Law Department leaders and with Functional Groups, such as the Global Privacy and ISRM organizations. The successful candidate is expected to represent J&J on privacy and cybersecurity topics in external organizations and play an active role in shaping the regulatory environment with respect to the data privacy and data protection laws and regulations of major global markets, particularly as they relate to healthcare. The position will be located in New Brunswick, New Jersey and will report to Marc Benson, Group Leader of the Digital Technology Legal Group.
Job responsibilities include
Define and develop the strategic direction and focus of the global privacy and cybersecurity legal team.
Lead a global team of privacy and cybersecurity attorneys who are responsible for partnering and providing legal advice to the Global Privacy organization and business leaders across the enterprise.
Provide strategic direction and legal counsel on proposed business arrangements, including digital health, connected devices, and blockchain technologies, and provide legal analysis and support to ensure that innovative approaches and creative solutions that J&J companies develop to enable business operations and goals comply with the complex web of global privacy and data protection laws.
Support J&J’s Global Privacy organization in the development and implementation of effective data privacy practices and policies designed to minimize risk and ensure the confidentiality and integrity of personal data by: leading the Law Department’s efforts to develop and implement globally applicable and locally specific training to foster privacy awareness and compliance; overseeing, guiding and ensuring consistency in privacy risk assessment and mitigation and the investigation and resolution of privacy and cyber incidents.
Develop and implement strategies to shape the external privacy landscape to enable the company to advance its mission in support of the research and development of innovative medicines and personalized health care and related programs
Work collaboratively with J&J’s Chief Privacy Officer, Global Privacy colleagues, Law Department colleagues, and other leaders across the J&J enterprise to assure coordinated efforts, share knowledge, and implement best practices relating to data protection and privacy.
Collaborate with business partners and contracting teams to counsel on and address data privacy issues in contractual arrangements with third parties, by creating, implementing and overseeing programs to ensure that business partners understand data flows, data storage and data use requirements and restrictions so that J&J products and services are compliantly designed from the outset, avoiding inefficiencies and minimizing speed to market.
Support innovative programs and strategies involving personal data, including digital health, connected devices, and blockchain technologies, by creating, implementing and overseeing programs to ensure that business partners understand data flows, data storage and data use requirements and restrictions so that J&J products and services are compliantly designed from the outset, avoiding inefficiencies and minimizing speed to market.
Leadership and development of the Global cross-sector privacy and cybersecurity legal team
Lead privacy and cybersecurity legal strategy across the Law Department working closely with Regulatory and Sector Lawyers
Serve as Member of or oversee direct reports who will serve as a member of:
Global Chief Privacy Officer’s Leadership Team
Data Privacy Steering Committee
Corporate Compliance Committee
Enterprise Breach Response Team
Drive G&Os that focus on novel and complex areas and align with business priorities
Develop strategy for building the capabilities of non-privacy lawyers on privacy and cybersecurity issues
A licensed attorney with a minimum of 15 years of relevant legal experience is preferred.
Must have substantial experience assessing and driving legal strategies and risks relating to data privacy and data protection requirements around the world, and in identifying and advising senior business and functional leaders on practical, compliant ways to mitigate such risks.
Experience working with senior-level stakeholders and cross-functional teams and achieving results through influence and collaboration.
Experience managing, shaping and developing global cross-sector privacy team.
CIPP-EU and US certification preferred.
Healthcare industry experience is strongly preferred.
Must have strong interpersonal, communication and leadership skills including ability to lead through influence.
Excellent strategic and analytical skills with a proven ability to adjust and thrive in a rapidly changing environment.
Multi-country experience across geographies of varied sizes and businesses is preferred.
Must be committed to demonstrating the highest ethical standards in all interactions, including with colleagues, peers, stakeholders, business partners and external parties.
Up to approximately 20% domestic and international travel may be required.
