Medical Affairs Director

How will you make an impact?
The Medical Affairs Director will be responsible for the strategic and functional leadership of the NA Medical Affairs Team and the activities promoted in NA by the Clinical Sequencing Division (CSD) at Thermo Fisher Scientific. By providing the most effective sequencing solutions within the clinical and translational research space the CDS is effectively enabling Precision Medicine across the major healthcare providers globally. While we want to continue providing and possibility expand our clinal reach by supporting clinical validity/utility studies and by generating in-country evidence as well as at the international level, we seek to ameliorate our understanding of the fast-evolving molecular diagnostics field. To that end, the Medical Affairs Director will develop a NA focused strategy to sustain our Division growth within the pathology and oncology medical domains. Collaborations with Pharma partners, and peer-to-peer medical educational activities will be another essential goal to this figure.

What will you do?

  • Develop strategies for generating evidence within Pathology/Oncology utilizing NGS (Clinical Validity/Utility studies performed in NA).
  • Fosters and facilitates NA based investigator sponsored trial/studies and execution/reporting of approved projects.
  • Stay abreast of the clinical literature in NGS, specifically in Pathology and Oncology.
  • Proactively work to maintain and develop high level NA KOL engagement to help develop effective research and access strategies.
  • Oversees the rapid build-out of the NA medical affairs field team supporting assays pre- and post-launch activities.
  • Develop training materials for MSLs and establishes information technology systems and other field medical affairs infrastructure.
  • Develop evaluates and delivers core training to the MSL, Sales, Commercial, Marketing and R&D team with a focus on product launch clinical readiness, accountable for the quality and consistency of scientific and medical knowledge of NA medical affairs Team.
  • Educates internal team members on disease state paradigm changes, competitive intelligence, and key opinion leader views and opinions as it pertains to the products.
  • Partners with the global medical affairs leader in the development of the medical education strategy and tactics and defines the strategic direction and execution of it.
  • Leads NA strategy and development of processes and capabilities that optimize the delivery of medical and scientific services to internal stakeholders (Sales, Commercial, Marketing and R&D teams) and external customers.
  • Provides medical and clinical expertise to internal (marketing, sales, manufacturing, managed care, regulatory affairs, R&D, and legal) and external (healthcare professionals, patients, advocacy groups, etc.) customers.
  • Effectively and quickly develops successful relationships and partners with Cross-Functional Business Unit team members.
  • Ensures that medical affairs resources such as consultants’ meetings, advisory board meetings, medical conventions, national societies are duly translated into profitable materials for other internal stakeholders.
  • Works closely with the NA sales and marketing directors to ensure optimal alignment of field resources to deliver area goals and objectives, and successful product launches.
  • Plan scientific programs at congresses and company-sponsored symposia.
  • Reviews and approves in agreement with the global leader advertising, promotional, as well as scientific and educational materials.

How will you get here?

  • An advanced degree (MD, MD/PhD or PhD) is required.
  • A minimum of 5+ years’ experience in medical affairs in the pharmaceutical, medical device, or diagnostics industry (including consultancy and academia).
  • Previous work in clinical diagnostics pathology / genetics laboratory is preferred.
  • Previous experience in Oncology and/or Immunotherapy is preferred.
  • Must be a team player with strong negotiation, problem-solving and strategic influencing skills.
  • Requires the ability to effectively articulate highly technical/complex scientific data and concepts to audiences with differing scientific and technical knowledge.
  • Must have proven ability to perform successfully under stringent timelines and with changing and competing priorities.
  • Understands factors driving market access and how clinical evidence can support access decisions.
  • A track record of delivering relevant clinical evidence, dossier adaptations, and of scientific publications in relevant professional and disease area related journals.
  • A strong knowledge of clinical development operations; including experience in Good Clinical Practice (GCP) and Clinical Development Standard Operation Procedure and CLIA guidelines is a major plus.
  • International experience is required, as well as demonstrated cultural awareness.
  • Ability to travel at least 25-30%.
  • Can work from remove but must be able to travel ro CA to be periodically but mandatory present at either the SSF or San Diego office.
