Utility Billing/Collections Specialist
The St. Mary’s County Metropolitan Commission has an immediate opening for a Utility Billing Collections Specialist. This position performs utility collection functions which include sending reminder letters, identifying customers for service turnoffs, negotiating appropriate payment plans and extensions for delinquent accounts; Reviewing foreclosure and bankruptcy filings to aid in debt collection and ensure proper compliance with US Bankruptcy Code; and coordinating with County Treasurer for the sale of properties at the county tax sale; responding to customer inquiries regarding water and sewer accounts, service inquiries, complaints and delinquent accounts in–person and in writing; access and utilize multiple on-site databases such as Real Property Search, Maryland Judiciary Case Search and MDL and Records to research, open and terminate accounts and to aid in debt collection; Provides technical support to customers for online bill pay options, e-bill enrollment and password resets.
Required Skills and Abilities: Ability to gain working knowledge of St. Mary’s County Metropolitan Commission policies and procedures, Ability to act as a representative of St. Mary’s County Metropolitan Commission to the public; Knowledge of relevant collection policies and procedures; knowledge of the annotated Code of St. Mary’s County as it pertains to the collection of fees; Ability to effectively communicate and coordinate work with other staff members; Ability to operate relevant computer systems, including hardware and software and office machines; Regular attendance and punctuality.
Educations and Experience Required: High School diploma or GED; Three or more years’ experience in accounting or bookkeeping required; Prior billing, especially utility billing and customer service background in a service related industry is a plus.
Salary range begins at $20.14. Excellent benefits to include Health, dental, vision benefits; prescription drug program; State Retirement; generous vacation and sick leave; 12 paid holidays and a host of other benefits.
