Research Assistant (7102-61)
MDRC is seeking a Research Assistant to work in our Young Adults and Postsecondary Education policy area, which conducts research to gauge the impacts of programs designed to help low-income students succeed academically in community college and other postsecondary institutions.
For its growing postsecondary education agenda, MDRC is seeking a candidate interested in blending research skills, report coordination, interest in postsecondary education programs and/or research, and strong organizational skills. The new Research Assistant will have the unusual opportunity to work as part of a multidisciplinary team on current social policy issues related to postsecondary education in a dynamic and challenging environment, under the guidance and supervision of leading public policy researchers.
The position provides the successful candidates an opportunity to focus on a range of organizational tasks, editing and other report coordination duties, and analytical tasks, including:
•Involvement in different stages of evaluation design and implementation
•General project and management support for multiple projects, including scheduling meetings and note-taking
•Involvement in various stages of producing reports, proposals, and papers (coordinating across authors, writing, preparing charts and tables, fact-checking, and documentation)
•Preparation of figures and tables
•Collecting cost data, analyzing cost effectiveness, and evaluating program benefits
•Working with Publications staff to produce “camera ready” documents for printing and posting on MDRC’s website
The position may also provide opportunities for the successful candidate to join on site visits to community colleges or other institutions to help set up new studies and to collect data through qualitative interviews or observations.
Qualifications & Requirements Qualifications:
Candidates should have a BA/BS, preferably in a social science or English, and a strong interest in education and social policy issues. Desired knowledge and skills include strong writing and communication skills, excellent attention to detail and organization, strong interpersonal skills, a basic understanding of quantitative and qualitative research methods, and the ability to multitask. Experience with Microsoft Word and Excel, and prior experience working on a major research study and editing a large report or publication, are pluses. Candidates should also be comfortable working in a team-oriented and fast-paced environment.
The position is based in MDRC’s New York City office. Travel to study sites will be required. Some on-the-job training is provided. Salary and level will be commensurate with experience. Comprehensive fringe benefits offered.
